MATERIALS:
Materials you will need in first 3 drawing class:

1, two pencils, one (B or HB) and one (H or F).
2. Ballpoint pen, black or blue
3. one kneaded eraser
4. A small piece of drawing paper or a 150-300 gsm sketch pad. (Approx A4-A3 size)
5. Notebook or light paper sketchbook
6. optional-Tracing paper for transfer.

6 classes : first 3 on drawing, last 3 on painting
Class work: sketching exercises, drawing and painting from 1 selected picture or subject matter, if nothing selected use the class setup.

Beginners Drawing and Painting course Introduction

Class 1
Introduction slides-
From drawing to painting process and examples

Group activities-
Sit at a table after the slideshow and draw small thumbnails and value sketches in sketchbook from reference pictures.

Class work:
Pick an object or subject for the next 5 lessons to draw and paint from.
Write down your chosen subject.
Brain storm in sketchbook. Look around in the classroom for objects, online for pictures. (Only 5 classes so nothing too complicated, 1 object.)
If nothing comes to mind, use the class setup.

3 test drive sketches. Then try 3 block-ins

Class 2
Introduction slides-
Drawing and painting from observation, observation of shapes, light and shadow shapes in block-in style.

Group activities-
Sit at a table after the slideshow and draw small thumbnails and value sketches in sketchbook from reference pictures 02. Using “block-in” style.

Class work:
2 small sketches of the subject from different angles or lighting to study the form and contour details.
2 small sketches of 2 value light and shape composition.
2 small sketches of 3 value shape composition.
Start on the larger drawing by copying from sketch or transferring. (grid or digital)

Class 3
Introduction slides-
Block-in style. Talk about straight lines. Drawing and painting from observation, observation of shapes, light and shadow shapes

Group activities-
Sit at a table after the slideshow and draw small thumbnails and value sketches in sketchbook from reference pictures 03.

Class work:
Finish the larger preliminary drawing.
Make small value sketches in pencil or oil paint in raw umber and white.
