Started with putting the lights in this time, as I had quite a dark imprimatura. I was told later that it's not such a traditional way of doing it, usually we put the shadows in first. I'm not quite sure what the difference is though.
repainting the cheek again and again.

repainting thigh and bottom.
getting the roundness back
Adjusting values and repainting the soft turning waist again.
left: dry brush over semi dried paint (2 values, since it's quite opaque paint with white, it's probably close to a sfumato)
right: wet over wet with more values over and next to eachother. Don't know what this is called. Let's just call it the direct painting method for now. > <"
Repainting of upper left back and shoulder area.
Really don't like the podium, but still need to face it and do something about it. It's making the whole picture look bad. Maybe I'll use this chance to try painting with the palett knife.

oneWeekPortraitDay1-2
Instructor recommended to start on the big paper immediately, as we only have 5x3 hours to draw this. Also aim to get the drawing correct, emphasis on the proportions and shadow and light shape. I missed the edges again. It always takes me a little bit longer and later in my process.

Was a great fun project. Missed the neck connection though, will pay more attention on this part next time.
]]>Slowly adjusting values and colors. Fixing the drawing bit by bit but aiming to turn the head/cheek form first before adding the details of the features.
Lucky to get some extra studio time, was not managing the value on the cheek on the right side. Also added Ultramarine Blue to get the blue in the eyes and the green in the background. This was recommended since I was doing a master copy of the color, value and drawing. Rather than trying to get the impression with a limited palette, struggling with none matching hues. It will make a study too complicated.
Before and after adding of Ultramarine Blue. Also added more chromatic red and orange.

The brown pot was hard to judge it's value, had to keep adjusting my value mixtures. Instructor introduced me to use the palette knife, it was really fun making shapes with it. Definitely going to try more of that, especially for studies. Think of all the brushes you won't need to wash!! so missing the point... : P
The memory drawing above to the right was of my longpose 09, since we've been working on this pose for 4 weeks, it was a good experiment to see if we memorized our pose. There seems to be a connection between drawing from your head and drawing from observation. I never thought I would be able to draw my longpose from memory, but I kind of do remember the pose. Thougg I can't draw all out with details, it's obvious I have been focusing on the knee and shoulder area. I guess there is a point to building my visual library with constant sketching.
Below to the left is a portrait club sketch, to the right is my own project I am planning. Still work in progress, rethinking the image at the moment. Not sure about the facial expression anymore, feels like my idea was once good but now is just stupid.

Well, since this post was long delayed, let's get right to them. Check the links below for the different projects.

Value study, high contrast between light and shadow, low contrast inside light/ shadow shapes.
Color study, can't tell you how fun it is to see colors. Skin tones plus values together are certainily starting to show the complication this combination can creat, but here we are. That is all what we are doing here, practicing this and trying to understand it.
]]>For the first week we did something quite intense.
we did 3 one hour drawing every day for 3 or 4 days. First, we only use the flat shape simplification to assist us in blocking in the figure. The other days we only used observation focusing on construction to design the block in lines. So we are actually looking intensively at the form, finding the overlaps and landmarks to understand the 3 dimensional aspect. Then the last day we combined the 2 methods and did 2 drawings of 1.5 hour.
1 hour flat shape observation block-in
1 hour form observation block-in
1.5 hours
1.5 hours
It definitely made a lot of sense having both methods when drawing. one really helps simplify and be more accurate at the proportions, the other will help us design the simplification of lines to make more sense, that way we express the figure with the minimal lines but achieving good representation of gesture. It was also quite fun to just do a one hour drawing, brings some pressure but at the same time quite liberating from our regular daily training.

Rectus abdominis -
starts from the bottom of sternum
attaches at the top edge of pubic symphysis.
External oblique -
starts from the 5 or 6 th ribs, until the 12th ribs. Merge into one big mass if muscle lower down and attaches to the top of the illium spine of the pelvic bone.
Decided to make it bigger.
Started to change the expression, I thought it would be funny as a modern Taiwanese motif, if I was to add a peace sign of the hand next to a cheek. ><

Spent a week on the transfer drawing. It's helpful to use drawing as a way to study for the problems to come. But it became clear to me now that I really need time to learn to draw with the paint brushes.
transfer drawing
Value studies
transfering a small sketch with oil to do more studies with values.
Second week, first big flat blocks of value shapes, then slowly move to smaller shapes and smaller vaue jumps to turn the form .
As I was trying to turn the form of the cast, I needed to soften some edges, in the process of doing so, I lost the drawing almost completely, now it's going to take some time to get it back as well as keeping the form. Probably should spend a lot more time messing with it. drop some other things I'm doing might be necessary .
Repainting again and again , softening the edges and turning the form.

finished armature, with the height to the 7th vertebra(the one that points outwards most) being 62 cm.
In the front view the 2 protruding points are the 4th and the 8th ribs, rib cage starts alittle higher than the shoulder/ clavicles. Side view is the rib cage in a tilt, with 3 angle breaks, ending the oval a little in front of the center line(metal bar in the middle) of the human body.
Still need to fill in the rest of the rib cage.
